Zach Arnett Buyout: Mississippi State to Pay $678,000
Former Bulldogs Coach's Salary and Buyout Revealed
Exclusive Details from The Clarion-Ledger
OXFORD, Miss. - According to documents obtained by The Clarion-Ledger, Mississippi State University will pay former football coach Zach Arnett $678,000 as part of his buyout agreement.
Arnett, who was fired in December after just two seasons with the Bulldogs, was signed to a four-year contract worth $3 million per season with escalators. The buyout payment, which represents 22.6% of his remaining salary, is a significant expense for the university.
The documents also reveal that Arnett's salary with Ole Miss will be $3 million per annum. Arnett was hired by the Rebels as an analyst in January after being passed over for the head coaching position at Mississippi State following the tragic passing of Mike Leach.
The buyout payment highlights the financial challenges facing athletic departments in the ever-competitive world of college football. Mississippi State is now searching for a new head coach, and the university will need to carefully consider the financial implications of any potential hire.
Zach Arnett, a former standout linebacker at Missouri, was hired by Mississippi State in 2020. He led the Bulldogs to a 6-6 record in his first season but struggled in 2022, finishing with a 4-8 record.
